In short: MAUD Medical Clinic is a women's health and vaginal health clinic at 909 1 Ave NE in Bridgeland, founded by Maria Wu. The clinic describes itself as the first vaginal health clinic in Calgary, with publicly funded physician care alongside pelvic floor physiotherapy, menopause care, nutrition counselling and more.

Some of the best businesses in a neighbourhood are the ones that make people feel safe walking through the door. In this Bridgeland business spotlight, we're featuring MAUD Medical Clinic on 1st Avenue NE, and the founder behind it, Maria Wu.

What is MAUD Medical Clinic?

In MAUD's own words, the clinic "was built by a woman for women," with a focus on "awareness, agency, and advancing women's health." MAUD describes itself as the first vaginal health clinic in Calgary and takes an education-led, evidence-based approach, with care that runs "from your first period to perimenopause, menopause, pelvic health, uro concerns and sexual function."

When Avenue Calgary covered the clinic's opening, it introduced Maria Wu and Louis Duncan-He as the pair behind MAUD, a centre to advance vaginal health and education in Bridgeland.

Services at MAUD

According to maudmedical.com, MAUD's publicly funded physicians offer appointments that remain covered through Alberta Health Care, including:

  • Pap tests and cervical cancer screening
  • IUD insertion and removal, with pain management options
  • STI testing and sexual health care
  • Menopause and hormone therapy support
  • Contraception counselling
  • Vaginal and pelvic health assessments

Alongside the physicians, the clinic lists allied health services such as pelvic floor physiotherapy, pessary care, EMSELLA, nutrition counselling, sex counselling, laser treatments, and paramedical tattooing for people rebuilding confidence after a mastectomy. MAUD notes that some of these services may be eligible for extended health benefits, depending on your insurance. For the full and current list, visit MAUD's services page or call the clinic.

"If we can embolden women to speak openly about vaginal health, we can move closer toward equitable healthcare for all."

According to her page on the MAUD site, Maria is a recipient of the Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case, president of the We Are MAUD Foundation, a partner in several medical facilities in Calgary, and Alberta Community Liaison to HPV Global Action.

She also speaks at workplaces, conferences, schools and community events on topics like women's health advocacy, creating safe spaces in medicine, HPV awareness, and body literacy. Organizations can book Maria as a speaker through MAUD.

Why it matters for the community

MAUD frames its mission around equitable healthcare: giving women "a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health care." That shows up in the details. Physician visits stay publicly funded, self-referrals are accepted for contraception, and the clinic runs community initiatives through the We Are MAUD Foundation, including Period Prosperity.

The clinic also makes privacy a promise: "In a public setting, we will not be the first to acknowledge you." For a health service like this, that kind of care counts for a lot.

It's also a fitting home. Bridgeland was home to the Calgary General Hospital for 88 years, and the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association is now building a commemorative plaza in Murdoch Park to honour it. A century later, the neighbourhood is still a place Calgarians come to for care.

Living near MAUD: about Bridgeland

Bridgeland-Riverside sits just across the Bow River from downtown, on the north side of Memorial Drive. It's one of Calgary's older inner-city communities, and today it mixes character homes and newer infill with condos and a walkable stretch of cafés, restaurants and local shops along 1st Avenue NE, where MAUD is.

  • Getting around: the Bridgeland/Memorial CTrain station is a short walk from 1st Avenue NE, and the river pathways connect to downtown and East Village.
  • Community life: the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association runs a farmers market, a rooftop garden, Bridgeland Walks and seniors wellness classes.
  • Green space: Murdoch Park sits on the footprint of the old General Hospital, and Tom Campbell's Hill looks out over the river valley and the city.
